Imagine someone sitting next to you in a flight and constantly talking. You have nowhere to go and you have no ear plugs. Exhausting isn't it ? Welcome to the movie theater of the mind (called "Chitta" in Yoga). There are images and sounds played there constantly and there is no escape. Well, not quite. There is escape if you train to focus your mind on certain sensations in the body that evoke a greater response than those produced by the movie theater, large enough to still the mind and suppress the "discursive thoughts" from taking over. In the Yoga sutras, Patannali calls these Ālambana or anchors, to rest the mind on, for, Patanjali says that, cessation of the turbulence of the mind by one-pointed focus is the sure way to get rid of these troubling thoughts in the mind.
In this workshop, we will look at some poses from the Ashtanga Vinyasa primary series and discuss the anchors in these poses to focus the mind on. These anchors can be subtle sensations in the body due to the engagement of the bandhas or simply the feeling of warmth and the flow of Prana in the body due to the Ujjayi breath.
This workshop is suitable for all levels of yoga asana practitioners
